Quote of the Week~Professor Owl’s Book Corner

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”

Product Description

The stunning young adult debut from international bestseller Harlan Coben is now in paperback! Mickey Bolitar’s year can’t get much worse. After witnessing his father’s death and sending his mom to rehab, he’s forced to live with his estranged uncle Myron and switch high schools. Fortunately, he’s met a great girl, Ashley, and it seems like things might finally be improving. But then Ashley vanishes. Mickey follows Ashley’s trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that Ashley isn’t who she claimed to be. And neither was Mickey’s father. Soon Mickey learns about a conspiracy so shocking that it leaves him questioning everything about the life he thought he knew. First introduced to readers in Harlan Coben’s novel Live Wire Mickey Bolitar is as quick-witted and clever as his uncle Myron, and eager to go to any length to save the people he cares about.

This book is being billed as a teen novel, but it will appeal to readers of all ages. The story line is filled with the same clever lines that we all love from Myron, Mickey is a loveable teenager dealing with unimaginable circumstances, and the novel with fun twists and turns that Harlan is known for. This is evidently going to be a new series ~ I cannot wait to read his upcoming books that follow Mickey Bolitar especially his next adventure in Seconds Away, published in the fall of 2012.

Warriors of Camlann

N.M. Browne(Author

 Camalann-crop

 Price:

Kindle version CDN$ 7.98

This is a sequel to Warriors of Alavna (Bloomsbury, 2002). Browne has created a strong, fierce young woman, and an introspective, sensitive, young man, and plays with the idea of looking at the “reality” of Camelot, with the glamour worn off.

Browne has again written a great story, I did however, prefer her first book. I did not like the changing of personalities, as Ursula’s thoughts and feelings were not well brought across to the reader, sometimes giving the impression of her being a brutal warrior liking to fight and threaten. Yet, the plot on whole was well-written, a pleasant read, I’d recommend it to any 11 year olds and above. (I did not like the story when he ending with a question mark.) I hope his third book will be published soon and not the three-year time frame as with the first two books.

Product Description:

When the thick fog of the Veil descends again, Dan and Ursula expect to return to present-day Britain. Instead, the treacherous mist transports them to an ancient world very like the one they have just escaped. But the battle they fought in only hours before is distant history to those around them and their deeds on the battlefield are legend. Dan and Ursula have travelled forwards through time, but how far? What has happened to their old allies and enemies? To find a way back, they have to piece the clues together and use all their skills of survival – as it seems they were not the only ones to step through the mist. Subtly and cleverly woven around Arthurian legend, Warriors is action-packed and completely compelling.

The teens’ final walk into the Veil will leave readers wondering where or – rather when, this pair will wind up.

About the Author

N. M. Browne was born in the north of England to Welsh parents. This background inspired a fascination with all things Celtic and an interest in how earlier societies survived the bleakness of a northern winter. She is a huge fantasy fan, and is enormously committed and passionate about writing quality books for children. She lives in London and is the author of Hunted and Warriors of Alavna.

Meet Randi Rhodes, the world’s first ninja detective! Mystery abounds in this delightful new middle grade series from Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer.

Deer Creek is a small town whose only hope for survival is the success of their Founder’s Day Festival. But the festival’s main attraction, a time capsule that many people believe hold the town’s treasure, has gone missing.

Randi Rhodes and her best friend, D.C., are Bruce Lee-inspired ninjas and local detectives determined to solve the case. Even if it means investigating in a haunted cabin and facing mean old Angus McCarthy, prime suspect.

They have three days to find the treasure…the future of their whole town is at stake! Will these kids be able to save the day?

This is a charming book for young teenager. The characters are well-developed; it has entertaining plot twists, and end-of-chapter ninja activities for the adventurous.

Although I am well beyond being a young teenager, I cannot

wait for the next adventure.
